This blog will serve as a place to consider how is art viewed and perceived in our world. Each week students should read the prompt or art article and write a 200+ personal response to the topic of the week. Original ideas are valued, so do not piggyback on others ideas, but find your own unique perspective on the topic. Prompts will be given on Monday and due as a blog response by the following Monday. Responses will be worth 10 points each and will be graded on word count as well as original and thoughtful self expression.
Prompt #1: List two artists that you admire. One should be an "old master" of sorts or fairly recognizable. The other should be someone that may not be as well known to the group. Please write at least 100 words explaining why you are drawn to your artists' works and what you admire about them. Be specific and thoughtful in your response. Please include at least one image from each artist as well.
Budi Kwan, Go West Budi Kwan in a graphic designer from Indonesia. The images in most of his work are free spirited, uplifting and playful. I love his bold use of block color and use of positive and negative space. I also appreciate that his work is highly accessible. Several sites carry him graphic designs as prints, t shirts, pillows, even lunch boxes (check out mine...). The image above and on my lunch box are similar in style, but I also appreciate his range in working in different styles. I admire his work as a graphic designer and have personal goals to better learn graphic design tools to use in my own work. See more of his work here. | Henri Matisse: Musique Why do I love Matisse, let me count the ways... Matisse was once called a wild beast for his bold use of colors (fauvism). I love big bold contrasting colors. I am really drawn to his compositions layered with thoughtful and bold use of color theory, then peppered with texture and pattern. I also appreciate that he did paintings, drawings, paper cut outs, sculptures; really a jack of all art trades. His paper cut out series began when he was trapped, lying on his back in a hospital bedroom. He couldn't paint or draw lying flat, but couldn't not make art, so he had his assistant bring him bold sheets of paper and he began cutting out shapes and gluing them to his hospital bed wall. He cut outs, with abstracted shapes, clean lines and use of positive and negative space may be what he is best known for, and was developed making the best of a bad situation. Who can't appreciate that? |
